Taylor Made for Coaching
Taylor has always believed in inspiring others to pursue their dreams. He wants people to realize that all things are possible if you believe, work hard and never give up. Taylor made for Coaching tells the story of how Dedrique Taylor went from a young boy growing up in a diverse community in Pomona, Ca to a head basketball coach at a Division 1 college. Taylor’s hope is that anyone who is struggling to reach their dreams will realize, through his book, how to find their way and persevere.
Taylor Made for Coaching
Prior to entering his eighth season at Cal State Fullerton, Coach Taylor was honored as one of the Big West’s Top Head Coaches of the Century by BustingBrackets.com. During his tenure he has led the Titans to one NCAA Tournament appearance and, for the first time, back-to-back Big West Tournament Championship game appearances. Taylor has coached and developed 24 student-athletes that have gone on to play professionally. Of those players, 16 of them have earned All-Big West honors. In addition, under Taylor’s mentorship, former Titans assistant coaches Danny Sprinkle (Montana State) and John Smith (Cal Poly) became the first ever pair of mid-major assistant coaches from the same school to be appointed as head coaches in the same season.

Coach John Thompson’s Explanation, “The saying on that wall is that 10 pounds of air in a basketball should not be your sum total,” Thompson said. “We said that a lot about your experiences in the game because your life is useless if the only significance as a ballplayer and an athlete is 10 pounds of air in a basketball. I would tell the kids all the time, if they let all the air out of all the basketballs in the world, and you had no value, how significant is your life?”
